Automobiles The BMW X3 series consists of crossover sports utility vehicles marketed by BMW, the giant automaker. These cars, now in their second generation are based on the BMW three series platform. The X3 was designed by BMW with the help of the Austrian .pany, Magnar Steyr which manufactured all first generation X3s under contract. However, the second generation cars are all produced in the Spartanburg plant in the United States. The precursor to the production of the X3 was presented by BMW in the form of a concept car which was unveiled at the Detroit motor show in May 2003. Nicknamed the xActivity, the car was previewed based on the BMW three series platform; .plete with a vestigial roof any without windows. Just as the .pany had used some parts from the E39 five series to assemble the X5, which was the X3s predecessor, engineers used certain parts from the three series to .plete the construction of the X3. A fine example is the rear suspension seen in the e4633xi. At its premiere towards the end of 2003, BMW said that a new four wheel drive system would be used to power the car. This system, which had been introduced in the X5 and marketed as the xDrive, could intervene automatically whenever instabilities were sensed even before the driver became aware of the existence of any instability. The success of the BMW E83 2003 X3 SAV prompted rival automakers to make similar offerings, the most notable one being the Audi Q5, Infiniti EX35, Acura RDX, Land Rover LR2, Mercedes Benz GLK and the Cadillac SRX. However, despite its numerous strong points that other automakers could only hope to match, the BMW E83 2003 X3 SAV found some criticism. Some race drivers described it as a rough ride while its relatively small interior was accused of relying too much on plastic .ponents. The cars passenger platform also denied it vial off-road capability. There also were a few grumblings that the car was overpriced, a basic 2.5 liter engine without added candy such as cruise control and automatic headlights was just not worth $300,000. However, most of these .plaints were rectified by BMW in 2005. The mid cycle refreshment of the X3 included multiple upgrades on the engine, interiors, and suspension and body bumpers.
